Sunday 15th November 2009

The 62nd Alnwick Northumbrian Gathering, which took place on the weekend of the 13th and 14th November 2009 in the Playhouse, Alnwick proved to be a resounding success for the teenage musicians of Northumbria. The Open Championship for Northumbrian Smallpipes was won by Richard Cooper of Morpeth whilst the Open championship for Fiddles was won by Hannah Slater - Patterson of Longwhitton, Morpeth. This was not the end of the story of teenage success, Leonard Brown of South Shields won the Open Accordion Championship whilst Neil Riddell of South Charlton was named as the best local accordionist. All in all a great day for the young musicians of the northeast.
The Gathering was spared the torrential rainstorms, which struck the rest of the country and resulted in good attendance at all of the workshops and competitions that took place. For the first year all of the traditional musical instrument, singing and dialect poetry workshops and competitions were centred on the Alnwick Playhouse which has proven to be an ideal venue for the event.
The evening Northumbrian Concert once again proved to be a resounding success with excellent music by numerous musicians, a dazzling display of traditional clog dancing by Shona Harper with the evening ending with a virtuoso performance by local duo Andy and Margaret Watchorn. A night not to have been missed.
A full list of results from The Gathering has been added to the the winners page of the web site
